Emergency Room Expansion: Palisades Medical Center
Hackensack Meridian Palisades Medical Center, a cornerstone of the North Bergen, New Jersey community, has embarked on a significant expansion of its emergency department to better serve the healthcare needs of Hudson and Southern Bergen counties. This $50 million project aims to double the size of the current emergency department, enhancing its capacity and accessibility for the community.
A Legacy of Community Care
Established in 1978, Palisades Medical Center has consistently evolved to meet the healthcare demands of its community. Located on the Hudson River waterfront, the 197-bed not-for-profit medical center serves a population of over 450,000 residents. In 2016, it became part of the Hackensack Meridian Health network, further strengthening its commitment to providing high-quality, comprehensive care.
Emergency Department Expansion
The current expansion will increase the emergency department’s size to 22,000 square feet, adding 17 treatment bays for a total of 50. The design includes an enlarged trauma room accommodating three treatment bays, 15 new fast-track bays for efficient non-urgent care, a dedicated area for pediatric patients, and a secure section for behavioral health patients. This state-of-the-art facility is expected to open in 2026, reflecting the medical center’s dedication to evolving with community needs.
Role During 9/11
During the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Palisades Medical Center played a crucial role in providing medical assistance. Emergency responders transported patients to the facility, where medical teams worked tirelessly to treat those affected. One firsthand account from an emergency medical responder recalls dropping off six patients at Palisades Medical Center on that day, highlighting the hospital’s active involvement in the emergency response efforts.
A Role in the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’
Palisades Medical Center played a pivotal role during the “Miracle on the Hudson” incident in 2009, when US Airways Flight 1549 made an emergency landing on the Hudson River. The medical center’s swift response and effective care for the passengers and crew underscored its critical role in emergency situations, highlighting its importance to the community.
Looking Ahead
The ongoing expansion of the emergency department signifies Palisades Medical Center’s unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare services. By continually adapting to the growing and changing needs of the North Hudson community, the medical center ensures that residents have access to top-tier emergency care, reinforcing its legacy as a trusted healthcare provider for generations past, present, and future.
