Tragic Fire at North Bergen Senior Housing Complex Claims Two Lives

A devastating fire erupted early Thursday morning at the Collum Towers senior housing complex in North Bergen, resulting in the deaths of two residents. The blaze began around 1:30 a.m. on the 10th floor of the building and was contained to a single unit.
In addition to the fatalities, two police officers were hospitalized for smoke inhalation sustained during rescue efforts. The fire has displaced 29 residents from 24 apartments. The North Bergen Housing Authority has temporarily relocated the affected individuals to a nearby hotel and is currently assessing the extent of the damage.
Multiple agencies, including North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, responded promptly to the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
This incident underscores the importance of fire safety measures in residential buildings, especially those housing vulnerable populations. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and ensure that smoke detectors and other safety equipment are in working order.
