Union City Police Saves Man who Jumped: A Well Placed Police Car Prevented Injuries
Early Sunday morning in Union City, quick action by local police prevented a potentially tragic incident when a 27-year-old man attempted to jump from a highway sign approximately 30 feet above Route 495 at Bergenline Avenue and 31st Street. The incident unfolded around 5 a.m. when the man climbed over a fence and began pacing the narrow ledge of the highway sign. The situation escalated when the man began to hang over the road as misty weather added to the dangerous conditions.
Responding officers immediately set up a squad car beneath the man’s position. After several tense minutes, the man fell from the sign and landed face-down on the roof of the police vehicle. Remarkably, he was unharmed and was able to walk unassisted to an ambulance for medical evaluation.
The rescue was the result of coordinated efforts by eleven police officers and two civilian dispatchers, who worked seamlessly to de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of the man and motorists on the highway. Officers involved included Sgt. Jose Martinez, P.O. Jose Guevara, and P.O. Damian Middlebrooks, along with Sgt. Hector Brea, Sgt. Christopher Estevez, P.O. Xavier Soto, P.O. Mohsin Rafiq, P.O. Deuny Pena, P.O. Michael Martinez, P.O. Carla Jara, and P.O. Jose Cortez. Dispatchers Lisette Sarrante and Warquiris Martinez also played a key role in managing communication and support during the crisis.
Thanks to the swift response and professionalism of the officers and dispatchers, no injuries were reported among the police, the man involved, or drivers on Route 495. This successful outcome highlights the importance of effective training, quick thinking, and teamwork in high-stress situations.
