Union City, N.J. — November 15, 2025 — Investigative journalist Leroy Truth has been released from the Hudson County Correctional Facility, his team confirmed late Saturday night. Truth, who was arrested during an appearance at the Union City Board of Education building on November 14, says the experience has only strengthened his resolve to continue exposing alleged corruption in Union City, Mayor and State Senator Brian Stack, and the Board of Education.

Truth’s Statement: Fired Up, Not Silenced

In a statement shared publicly following his release, Truth declared that “now more than ever,” he is motivated to press on with his investigation into what he describes as a deeply entrenched political machine in Union City. He said that despite the arrest, “they are doing nothing but making me stronger, and making my team stronger — nothing is going to stop us.”

He credited his legal team and attorneys for their efforts over the past 24 hours, stressing that “a lot of work is being done behind the scenes.” Truth added that his team is “ready for anything that Brian throws at us, and any of his goons who are willing to do the dirty work for him.”

Looking ahead, he said he is confident in a “very victorious” outcome. “We are not going anywhere,” he declared, “we’re here to stay.”

Background: What Led to the Arrest

According to the original breaking report, Truth went to the Union City Board of Education building to submit Open Public Records Act (OPRA) requests and to meet the superintendent, all while live-streaming the encounter on YouTube.

He asserts he had credible allegations of sexual assault involving an assistant principal at Union City High School.  Staff allegedly denied him entry, prompting him to call police.

When officers arrived, they gave him OPRA forms, but a verbal exchange escalated. According to witnesses, Truth was pushed to the ground, and his phone flew out of his hand.  He was then taken into custody on charges including aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and obstruction.

Due to an apparent conflict of interest, the case was transferred from Hudson County to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Bigger Context: Truth vs. Stack

Truth (real name Leonard Filipowski) has long positioned himself as a watchdog on Union City politics. He has previously filed a false arrest lawsuit against Mayor Brian Stack and the Union City Police Department, alleging civil rights violations.

He’s also been openly critical of what he calls Stack’s “political machine,” accusing it of suppressing dissent and targeting him for his reporting.

Legal Perspective & Pressure

This is not Truth’s first legal confrontation. In October 2025, a judge dismissed charges against him in Trenton Municipal Court, after prosecutors conceded his activities were constitutionally protected under the First Amendment.

That is only one out of many charges in which all have been dismissed. Including the first unconstitutional arrest by Union City Police Captain Omar Hernandez and Officer Fernando Muro.

Yet, his path forward is likely to remain contentious. In recent months, he has faced setbacks: his federal civil rights lawsuit against Stack and other officials was dismissed.

What Comes Next

Now that Truth is out of custody, he says his investigation will intensify:

He plans to pursue more OPRA records linked to the Board of Education. He says his legal team is preparing to counter any further legal actions from Stack’s camp. His supporters believe this episode will galvanize their efforts, drawing more attention to their allegations of corruption.

Bottom Line: Leroy Truth’s release seems to have deepened his determination rather than deterred him. As he recommits to his work, the battle lines between him and Mayor Brian Stack — long drawn — are clearly sharpening.

Note: All claims by Truth remain allegations unless proven in court. He is presumed innocent. Hudson County Truth Media has reported on his arrest and release.
